Atlanta Public School’s high school graduation rate rose to 59.1 percent in 2014, up from 58.6 percent in 2013 and 50.9 percent in 2012 according to data from the Georgia Department of Education. This same data showed that Atlanta was second-to-last in the list of “Big City School Districts with High Concentrations of Low Income Students”. Furthermore, a review of the 2014 Building A Grad Nation annual report has Atlanta Public Schools ranked number 199 out of the top 200 largest school districts in the country.
McCallie foresaw the need for a bridge to gap the rise of Atlanta’s high school student drop out rate and student athlete opportunities. Through fundraising, charitable donations, and government grants, Steps of Purpose seeks to increase awareness of the connection between organized sports and physical activity programs and student athlete opportunities in inner-city and rural schools for under-served students in the community to promote healthy and positive youth development in communities.
